香港特殊學習障礙協會於1998年成立，由一班有特殊學習障礙（簡稱「學障」）子女的家長組成的自助組織，並於1999正式成為慈善團體。隨著會務發展迅速，協會於2011年登記成為有限公司。 當時在屯門醫院的家長小組裏，一班家長知道自己子女是學障的時候，心情萬分沮喪、徬徨無助，社會人士、學校對學障的認識更是一無所知。家長們透過小組彼此分享交流，舒緩面對學障子女的壓力，減低孤單感；同時，他們深感社會人士對學障缺乏認識，導致這些學童常被標籤為學習懶散或不合作，得不到公平的教育，造成自我形象低落、極度害怕接觸文字，嚴重影響其心智發展。因此，一班家長決定成立香港特殊學習障礙協會，好讓更多的同路人可以得到支持，亦希望令社會大眾可以了解學障孩兒及家長的需要。
過去十八年，本會由初期的家長支援小組，慢慢發展出不同的家長工作。每月均由家長義工籌辦家長聚會、親子活動、講座等，讓家長能有機會舒緩壓力、汲取過來人的經驗及價值觀，從而學習接納自己學障子女，領略學習方法；改善親子關係。與此同時，本會義工家長也負責接聽熱線，為有需要的家長提供意見及情緒上的支援。
